The Galleri

The Galleri

Galleri Astley was founded in the fall of 1968 in Köping. In may of 1977, the gallery to was moved to Uttersberg. The splendid, old railway station built in 1897 was filled with art and the famous Russian-American artist Ernst Neizvestny took part in the grand opening exhibition. The Gallery is comprised of six rooms in varied format and has a total space of 140 sq.m. We arrange 10-12 exhibitions a year.

The Museum
Museum

The finely restored magazine houses "the Museum". Exhibitions are varied and change regularly. They can be a mix of art from our own collection, the borrowed works of private collectors or works on loan from other museums. At Galleri Astley we have seen ancient Peruvian treasures in ceramic, antique Indonesian textiles and "Wood in Nordic Art", to name just a few of the many reasons to return again and again!.

The Graphics Room on the Museums' bottom floor shows prints of all types. Here can be found, etching and engravings, lithographs, serigraphs and woodcuts by many renowned artists. Also on the ground floor is the Café Guldmisteln (Mistletoe) with great coffee and tasty breads and cookies for those in need of a little pause.

The Park

Park

Between the gallery and the museum lies the sculpture park featuring an authentic Haida totem pole carved in place and raised by Don Yeomans. Here are also two massive granite sculptures by the Japanese artist Takashi Naraha as well as 20 or so works by a variety of artists such as. Veikko Keränen, Claes Hake, Pierre Olofsson, Karl-Erik Häggblad, Olle Bonniér, Alf Olsson, Sam Westerholm, L-E Falk, Nils G. Stenqvist och PG Thelander.

Printmaking Workshop

pm_logo2

In January of 1994 Galleri Astley opened its Printmaking workshop. The first guest artist to make a print was Svante Rydberg when he made his first serigraph. The shop has grown since then to include an intaglio press and a letterpress. We produce 6 to 12 original editions a year. Though we do not posses the capability of making Lithograph's at this time, we have many editions in our collection, some of which can be seen by clicking the "Original Prints" button on the Main Menu to the left. We even have a large selection of prints from other Swedish and international artist not shown here. Please feel free to contact us for more information.

Vennum

Joan Vennum, Later, 29 x 24", Oil on Canvas, 2001

JOAN VENNUM’S paintings employ delicate cursive strokes to express the infinitude of space. Her gestural, looping lines create a veil of ephemeral color, through which the viewer sees the illusion of something limitless, without beginning or end. There is a shimmering tension between fragility and strength in Vennum’s pieces; borne from the artist’s love for detail as well as for the sweeping language of Abstract Expressionism. Vennum is a native of New York and has exhibited throughout the United States, Europe and India. She has exhibited or is in the collection of many important art institutions including: Columbia University Library, New York, New York; the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York; The New York Public Library, New York, New York; the Albright Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York; the Maryland Institute, Baltimore, Maryland; the Konstmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden; Galleri Astley, Uttersberg, Sweden; and the Museo Civico, Taverna, Italy.

Ted Kurahara, Double Mars Black over Cadmium Red Medium,
Comprised of two panels, each 72 x 36", 2003

TED KURAHARA is an abstract painter born in Seattle and working in New York.  His paintings, seemingly minimal, are very rich and alluring as a result of a thoughtful and meticulous layering of paint.  The works address the strengths of silence and solitude.

Ted Kurahara received his art training in St. Louis and did graduate work in Peoria, Illinois before arriving in New York City in 1959.  While working in the supportive and energized atmosphere of downtown New York, he showed at the Mi Chou Gallery, one of the first important Asian-American venues in America.  He has exhibited world-wide, notably in France, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland, to great critical acclaim.

In essence, Ted Kurahara’s oeuvre speaks about quiet yet forceful persistence; there is in his work the desperate and successful search for the fundamental and the inaccessible. As the critic Jerome Sans noted, “All imperfection, all hesitation has been  excised.”
