The Galleri

The Galleri

Galleri Astley was founded in the fall of 1968 in Köping. In may of 1977, the gallery to was moved to Uttersberg. The splendid, old railway station built in 1897 was filled with art and the famous Russian-American artist Ernst Neizvestny took part in the grand opening exhibition. The Gallery is comprised of six rooms in varied format and has a total space of 140 sq.m. We arrange 10-12 exhibitions a year.

The Museum
Museum

The finely restored magazine houses "the Museum". Exhibitions are varied and change regularly. They can be a mix of art from our own collection, the borrowed works of private collectors or works on loan from other museums. At Galleri Astley we have seen ancient Peruvian treasures in ceramic, antique Indonesian textiles and "Wood in Nordic Art", to name just a few of the many reasons to return again and again!.

The Graphics Room on the Museums' bottom floor shows prints of all types. Here can be found, etching and engravings, lithographs, serigraphs and woodcuts by many renowned artists. Also on the ground floor is the Café Guldmisteln (Mistletoe) with great coffee and tasty breads and cookies for those in need of a little pause.

The Park

Park

Between the gallery and the museum lies the sculpture park featuring an authentic Haida totem pole carved in place and raised by Don Yeomans. Here are also two massive granite sculptures by the Japanese artist Takashi Naraha as well as 20 or so works by a variety of artists such as. Veikko Keränen, Claes Hake, Pierre Olofsson, Karl-Erik Häggblad, Olle Bonniér, Alf Olsson, Sam Westerholm, L-E Falk, Nils G. Stenqvist och PG Thelander.

Printmaking Workshop

pm_logo2

In January of 1994 Galleri Astley opened its Printmaking workshop. The first guest artist to make a print was Svante Rydberg when he made his first serigraph. The shop has grown since then to include an intaglio press and a letterpress. We produce 6 to 12 original editions a year. Though we do not posses the capability of making Lithograph's at this time, we have many editions in our collection, some of which can be seen by clicking the "Original Prints" button on the Main Menu to the left. We even have a large selection of prints from other Swedish and international artist not shown here. Please feel free to contact us for more information.

"I work with woodcuts. Using clippings from magazines, advertisements and animal books I paste up a collage which I then trace onto wooden blocks. The woodcuts are then printed onto single colored, polka dot, striped and floral patterned cloth. The images describe the stressful, highly torqued tempo of todays society. The constant flow of images that anticipate a continious changing of chanels make themselves noticeable. In the images humor is mixed with bitter seriousness. The medieval printing technique meets modern elements from the world of today. An epochal collision ensues."

This exhibition is a retrospective of Martin Ljungberg's paintings, sculpture and drawings from his student years in the 1950's through to his passing in 2008.

Martin Ljunggren was a reknown colorist and a genuine visual poet, who, in the words of Per Drougges could "inspire the commonplace and embody the dreamed". (Utst. Katalog Södertälje Konsthall 1991)

102010BookArtists

Ten book artists have chosen to work together for a joint exhibition. Their objective is to show a finely tuned combination of excellent craftsmanship and sterling artistic quality.

All ten artists work "inside out", that is to say they work with all the means of expression already at their disposal; bookbinding, paper and inlay material, images, illustrations and typography. This allows each artist to work freely with small editions of every work.

The ten artists are:

Monica Langwe, Sweden.
Annika Mattsson Baudry, France.
Anders Zitting, Sweden.
Lennart Mänd, Estonia.
Carmencho Arregui, Italy.
Jan Peter Zimmerlich, Switzerland.
Leif Malmgren, Sweden.
Adam Larsson, Sweden.
Manne Dahlstedt, Sweden.
Sün Evrard, France.

Professor Leif Sourander, Åbo, Finland, has collected ceramics since the 1950's and today has one of Europe's foremost collections. Professor Sournader concentrated his collection on two of the Chinese periods, Tang and Song, which are regarded amongst connoisseurs as the foremost in the history of ceramics. In contrast to the often perfect ceramics of China will be shown a handful of Korean ceramic objects all of which pertain to the scholar's workspace: brush holders, washstands, water droppers.

From our own ceramic treasuretrove, Galleri Astley will show a selection of Chinese and Korean items, many of which will be available for purchase.
